Personal:

David Swanson first got into road cycling at the encouragement of a friend in the early 2000s, and quickly found a love for racing. It was the same friend who introduced Swanson to tandem bikes and who introduced him to a local rider named Scott Smith who was a visually impaired cyclist.

Swanson rode with Smith in 2005 and 2006, and while they were at a tandem development camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Swanson met Clark Rachfal for the first time. As Smith and Swanson parted ways, Swanson began riding with the Rachfal, and the duo quickly found success and were winning national titles within two years.

Within three years they won their first world title.
